THE RECIPIENTS

CONCEPTUAL NOTE

Conceptual note
According to Nasdaq, trends point to more than 90% of purchases being made through e-commerce by 2040. This unavoidable reality allows entrepreneurs to develop export activities, strengthen positions in international markets and scale their businesses. In 2021, around 3.8 billion people, approximately half of the world's population, made purchases of goods or services online. That same year, online retail sales amounted to $4.5 trillion worldwide. This reality reflects a profound change in consumer buying habits, with e-commerce gaining a position in sales compared to traditional commerce. The forecast is that by 2025, 4.9 billion online shoppers will be reached, corresponding to an average annual growth rate of 7% between 2021 and 2025.

In 2023, there were around 5.4 billion internet users worldwide, corresponding to a penetration rate of 67.9%. In that year, the African continent, with a population of 1.4 billion, had 602 million internet users, corresponding to a penetration rate of 43.2%, compared to 4.5 million users in 2000. In 2023, Europe had 747 million internet users in that same year, corresponding to a penetration rate of 89.2%.:

Global e-commerce revenues in Africa reached around $21.4 trillion in 2021 and are expected to reach around $46.1 trillion in 2025. The opportunities the digital economy offers are estimated to contribute more than $750 trillion to the African continent's annual GDP.:

The accelerated digitalization of social relations between citizens, the profound changes in modern society's consumption habits, and the rapid expansion of logistics operations for collecting and distributing parcels have placed the e-commerce sector at the forefront of international trade. In this new context, the winning companies will be those that can respond quickly to these citizens' new habits.

The development of technology, the growing preference of citizens for online shopping, the speed of delivery of products - same day express, the advantages of dematerialization and disintermediation in processes, the cost factor and flexibility, make logistics operators assume in the context of e-commerce a preponderant role in the functioning of internal and external commerce.

According to the International Telecommunication Union, UIT, Cabo Verde went from a modest number of Internet users in 2000, about 1.8% of the population, to a penetration rate of 62.3% in 2021. Aware of the potential and strategic economic value of e-commerce, its small domestic market, its condition as an island country and its population in the Diaspora, which totals more than twice the resident population, Cape Verde has integrated the main regional economic blocs and adopted a strong, successful commitment to the development of technology and the digitalization of its economy.

Many countries have a significant number of their citizens living outside their national territory, especially in the case of Cabo Verde, which has a tremendous geographical dispersion of its natural market and its strategic geoeconomic positions in different markets of greater relevance (Africa, Europe and the Americas), technology and e-Commerce play a significant role in connecting markets, companies and consumers.

In this context, a Training / Specialization in e-commerce and online business management will take place in Cabo Verde, from March 17 to 25, 2025, in the city of Praia, Santiago Island, aimed at young Entrepreneurs.

After specialization, Entrepreneurs will be able to develop their own businesses and take advantage of the high potential of the markets in which Cape Verde is an integral part, either as a full member or as a party to strategic agreements, namely the market of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, with more than 410 million consumers; the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) market, with more than 1.4 billion consumers; the AGOA market, USA, with more than 330 million consumers; and the European Union market (EU/GSP+) with more than 440 million consumers.

Economic operators thus have access to a market with about 2.2 billion consumers. Technology is a faithful ally to bridge borders and position itself, benefiting from permanent monitoring by internationally renowned specialists, operating according to the concept of Virtual Incubator Center.

The increasing globalization of the economy and the intensification of entrepreneurial competition have made scientific and technological knowledge one of the most relevant factors of competitiveness in the differentiation of products and services on the world market, thus strengthening the role of institutions responsible for scientific and technological production in global development.

The process of internationalization of universities marks a new era in the globalization of economies, businesses, science and technology, with a decisive impact on the future of nations through the transfer of technologies, generating new innovative businesses and leveraging entrepreneurial initiatives in the various markets.

It is in this context that the international event entitled University Symposium will be organized, which is divided into three components:
1. A Innovation Symposium, from June 3 to 5, 2024, centered on a global vision of science, technology and innovation produced in universities, as poles par excellence in scientific and technological development, as well as opportunities for cooperation between universities and businesses.

2. A Business Forum entitled Atlantic Business Forum, from June 6 to 7, 2024, under the slogan: «Cooperation between Universities and Enterprises in the development of nations», which aims to bring together companies, industries, universities, banks, insurance companies, technology companies, investors, financiers, importers, exporters and economic operators in general, from all sectors of activity of all origins, as well as institutions that are strongholds of development, focused on markets with high potentialand and opportunities, such as the cases of Europe and Africa.

The Event
Over the centuries, universities have been central to the development of humanity and civilizations. Universities and other public research institutions had a central function in the creation of new knowledge through scientific technological research and its subsequent dissemination, with a much localized geographical impact.

In recent decades and increasingly, in all continents, the best academic institutions have ceased to be at the service only for the regions or countries where they are geographically inserted. These receive and train, every year, thousands of young people from different countries and continents integrating them into their internal systems and at the end of the training cycle, these young people return, already qualified, to society, both in their respective countries and in other geographical areas. These young people assume the management of companies and the administration of their country, thus making university institutions a positive catalyst of excellence, exporters of best practices and scientific and technological cultures.

The best academic institutions from different countries and continents are increasingly integrating mobility programs for students, teachers and researchers, thus allowing the integration of their academic body into the global scientific community, favoring the adoption of processes of development, international cooperation, innovation, competitiveness and international integration of their countries into the global economy. Cooperation between universities and business plays a relevant role in the transfer of technology from universities to businesses and the financing of universities by businesses, thus creating synergies in the development of the scientific and technological system, innovations, new scientific and technological discoveries, in the qualification of highly specialized executives, the generation of innovative businesses and the significant contribution to the economic development of the regions.

Over the centuries, the development of nations, cultures and civilizations have intersected, regardless of the continent where each nation is located. The internationalization of businesses, the technology highway and the globalization of the economy have created opportunities and facilities for entrepreneurial universities and businesses to blur boundaries and generate disruption in markets.

In countries designated as developing, economic globalization and increasing competition provide local companies with three alternatives: acquisition of technology from abroad, development of internal I&D (research and development), the establishment of agreements with universities in cooperation processes with a view to obtaining, in the medium term, its own I&D capacity. Among these options, university-business cooperation is considered the most effective way for the modernization of local industries and the use of the academic community of universities that host students from third countries, namely, those in development as a vehicle for sharing experiences, the transfer of specialized know-how which is essential for the development of I&D within companies with high innovative potential.

Cooperation between universities and businesses is considered one of the most effective tools used by businesses to innovate and create competitiveness in their products and services. Thus, these companies can contribute decisively to scientific and technological development, in the national effort for the sustained socio-economic development of their respective countries, focused on human resources which constitute one of the central missions of universities.

Studies indicate that in 2020 there were more than 6.3 million internationally mobile students and that the global market for international students will be worth $433 billion by 2030. These same studies indicate that out of 8,800 000 students in sub-Saharan Africa, 430,000 are on mobility, or around 4.9% of the total and around 7% of the world total. Approximately 1,075,496 international students attended U.S. universities during the 2019-2020 academic year, representing approximately 5.4% of all college students enrolled in the country during that academic year, or approximately 20 million students in total. In 2020, more than 1,460,000 foreign students conducted higher level studies across the European Union. More than 70,000 students of foreign nationality attend higher education institutions in Portugal.

It is in this context that there will be the international event entitled University Symposium, which will take place in Lisbon, from June 3 to 7, 2024. This event is intended to bring together universities and companies from the European Union, the African continent and other regions of the world, focused on science and technology developed in universities and innovations developed in companies, as well as in entrepreneurial activities carried out or with potential for development in different markets.

The program of the said event is subdivided into three components: a first entitled Innovation Symposium; a second which consists of a fair focused on science and technology developed in universities and innovations developed in companies, called Tecnopolys Exhibition, and a third component dedicated to a Business Forum called Atlantic Business Forum.
